Frequently Asked Questions

When is it?

The date will be announced as soon as possible. It will be over a weekend later this year.

Where is it?

The social events will take place in Bronte Brasserie in the Canham Turner building (what you might remember as Staff House).

Three Thing Game will be running in it's spiritual home: the Fenner Computer Lab.

Who can come?

The event is open past or present students or staff members over the fifty years of Computer Science in Hull. You can contact us here

What's happening?

The event will formally start on Friday 11th October at 6:00pm with a meetup on campus. A good place to meet up and unwind after your journey up to Hull. We'll be around to chat about the old times.

On Saturday morning our day of celebration starts at 11:00am with tours around the campus, or a coffee in the Bronte Brasserie. We'll have a memory board for pictures from the past (send us some if you want to be famous-ish) plus retro consoles to play on. After lunch we'll have a sequence of micro-talks, starting with an overview of current research activities and then moving onto stories from Hull past and present. If you've got something to tell we'd love to hear from you.

At 4:30 we'll award the prizes for the Three Thing Game competition and serve out the food. Then, at 7:00pm we start the evening's entertainments with a 'Welcome Party Redux'. If you've got fond memories of your first social gathering here this is your chance to relive them. We're going to have a Welcome Quiz with fiendish questions, retro games, slot car racing we'll even 3D scan you and create an image of you in carbonite.

(this programme is slightly provisional and may be subject to change - especially if we can't find any carbonite)

What about Three Thing Game?

Glad you asked. We'll be running a special Three Thing Game hackathon over the weekend. You can form a team and take part making a game. There'll be a team sign up for the Three Thing Game completiton and we will run an online Thing Auction on Wednesday 9th October where you can get your things. You can spend the rest of the week preparing and then you can turn up on Friday and get together and code up your masterpiece. Judging will take place on Saturday afternoon starting at 3:00 pm with a grand prize presentation at the celebration at 4:30 pm.

Will there be anything for kids?

Yes. If you want to bring your kids along and show off your programming smarts by putting one of our Hull Pixelbot robots through its paces (and even make it play as part of a robot rugby team) we'll have a robot arena and some robots ready for you to play with on Saturday morning.

How much does it cost?

We will be providing lunch and dinner on Saturday 12th and so we will be making a charge of £15 plus booking fee per adult to cover this. We think this represents good value, expecially as those awfully nice folks at Visr have put some money behind the bar for the evening celebrations.

Can I help?

That would be lovely. We will be recruiting 'celebration elves' to help run the retro games, carbonite printing, slot car racing, Pixelbot rugby and campus tours. If you are local to Hull and fancy giving up a bit of your time we'd love to hear from you. Anyone who helps for an hour or so will get free entry to the event. You can contact us here

Can I sponsor something?

Yes please. We would love to talk to you about sponsorship. For a slot on our sponsors banner to paying for drinks, and everything in between. You can contact us here
